About Mandheling Green Coffee Beans

History of Mandheling Green Coffee Beans

The 1800s were the start of the history of Mandheling coffee. After the fruitful coffee plantations in Java island, the Dutch East Indies government brought coffee seeds to Sumatra. Through the Forced Cultivation System, the natives planted coffee seeds, and the plantations were spread to the highlands of North Sumatra.

Growing coffee in Mandheling happens on the slopes of Mount Leuser, near the port of Padang in the Balak region. Also, the plantations can be found in the Bukit Barisan area, which has altitudes of 2,500 to 5,000 meters above sea level. 

 

Characteristics and Flavors of Mandheling Coffee

Similar to other Sumatra coffees, Mandheling green coffee beans: are treated with Giling Basah or a wet hulling process. The process is known as semi-washed or semi-dried in other countries. It involves the removal of the coffee skin and grinding the parchment, but it leaves about 50% of the moisture content.

Due to this process, the coffee has low acidity and a whole body. The flavors consist of herbal and dark chocolate with woody and spicy hints. Thus, it has an earthy and spicy aroma with a sweet and light finish. Sometimes, you can find other tastes, such as orange and caramel.
